In Den Smidtske Gård, you will find a cosy courtyard atmosphere, perfect for a visit to the café or wine bar. You can also take a look inside the beautiful historic courtyard.

The story behind the merchant house

The fine old merchant house was begun in 1799 by the merchant Ingvard Smidt. It was built by master builder Anders Christensen Kruuse together with architect and sculptor Jens Hjernøe. This beautiful old half-timbered house at Søndergade 14 is the only one of Vejle's old merchant houses that has been preserved to this day.

The front along Søndergade is the oldest part of the property. You can still see the names of the builder and his wife, as well as the year, above the gateway. In this building, there were both living quarters with kitchen, utility room and ironing room (front house and north wing), as well as a granary, warehouse, carriage entrance and stables for the customers’ horses.
